This week I've bought a non-working PowerMac G4 "QuickSilver". The seller told me it is not working because of a broken power supply, so I hoped it's the only broken thing. This is how it looked when I brought it home:
So first I cleaned it up. With this Mac I got nice peripherals too:

Two mice are fully working, but on the keyboard there are some keys broken
because of liquid spill. I'll try to repair that later. |
Back to the PowerMac. I've read some articles and blogs about changing/repairing broken power supplies in PoweMacs and I found out that it's not so hard get it to work with normal PC ATX PSU rebuild to QuickSilver G4 PSU. Luckily I've got more than one unused ATX supplies so I decided to start the conversion. Unfortunately none of my supplies were same shaped as G4, so I used the original G4 PSU case and modified it. That was first part of the conversion:

Second part was to reconnect the G4 mainboard connector to the ATX power supply. Basically it requires to cut and than solder back about 22 wires. Others advices to use ATX 20 to 24 pin adapter instead of modifying the power supply directly. I decided not to follow this advice because I had to modify PSU case anyway as I used G4 PSU case and ATX electric parts, and I wanted to make everything to look close to the original G4 PSU. So I made everything inside the PSU case, that way you won't recognize anything when you just open the computer case:

After double-check that the wires are paired correctly I assambled the supply and conected the power cable. Surprise, it worked! My PowerMac G4 QuickSilver is working again, with only drawback: I can't use ADC anymore because ATX PSU does not provide 28V which is needed to power ADC. But since I don't own any such device, I don't mind. Also there is a possibility that deep sleeep won't be reliable (depends on build quality of ATX PSU), luckily I haven't noticed any problem yet.

After succesfull PSU repair I finally found out that there was 867 MHz G4 processor. As you can see on pics, there is installed some PCI card. Well, it's Twin Turbo 128 PCI graphics card with 8 MB of VRAM. I tried it out, but it seems to be working only under MAC OS 9, I'll try that later.
